The London Borough of Southwark is a diverse and culturally rich part of London, with more than 40% of its population born outside of England and 25% of residents identifying as Black.
However, Southwark’s own research shows that people from Black and minority ethnic communities experience a number of challenges such as socio-economic deprivation, poor housing conditions, poorer health outcomes and barriers to accessing services.
With these challenges in place — and the challenges in accessing the opportunities offered by the creative and cultural sectors — how can Southwark help to support a sustainable and thriving future for the Black cultural sector?
The Black Culture Conversation aims to understand how Southwark Council can best support the community.
“We want to work with our residents, creative practitioners and community organisations to co-create a sustainable vision for Black Culture in Southwark. One that is for the community, by the community.”
